“What me? No way! I am not good enough to do that.” “Aren’t you supposed to compete? I’m not ready for that.” The are just a few comments I have been hearing in the past week when I ask classes if they are signing up for the open. It’s this way of thinking that can become a mental block and be detrimental to your progress in the gym. Don’t get caught up in what you cannot do, but look at it as an opportunity to possibly learn something new or a chance to try something you have never done before.
You do not have to be a competitor or an elite athlete to sign up for the open. The open is FOR EVERYONE; men and women of all shapes, ages, abilities and sizes!! The open offers a way to test your fitness from year to year, to see if you improved on any movements or in your WOD times, as well as giving you a chance to see where you stand compared to athletes in your category world-wide. Remember, the open is scalable and has categories based on age and ability.
When you put your body to the test by pushing it to perform, you may be surprised by what you are capable of. I have helped judge two opens and nothing is more exciting than watching the average everyday Joe or Suzie from next door get their first Muscle Up, Snatch, Chest to Bars, doubleunders, or see athletes string their double unders in a row for the first time. The Open brings about many firsts in athletes, so why not test your body to see what it can do!
The Open is not all about competition – it's also about proving to yourself that you can do it. Most of our community is not looking to go to the Games, but they are always looking for ways to better themselves. The Open is an opportunity for you to celebrate all your hard work from the past year and cherish your health by going out and doing your best. It’s an opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest worldwide sporting events with your CrossFit family.
Strengthen our community: The coaches at Next Wave believe that one of the best ways to show support for fellow athletes is by cheering them on and helping them get through a brutal workout. This is why we created Friday Night Lights; it provides a change for athletes to encourage each other, as well as having safe, organized, planned events for the OPEN WODs each week for your convenience.
Next Wave Athletics will be hosting Friday Night Lights for members who have signed up for the open, which will include themes and fun prizes.. This competition is free, unless you want to purchase a t-shirt. If you decide you do not want to sign up for the open but would like to participate in Friday Night Lights with us as a community event, you are more than welcome to attend and compete. However, I would suggest that since you are already going to be participating in the workouts, why not just sign up for the open?
I truly hope that this blog has inspired you to sign up for the open and if it hasn’t then check out these videos and blogs from other athletes of all different ages and athletic abilities!
